When it’s Tough to Swallow: Problems and Solutions for Older Adults:
Most of us look forward to mealtime. It is, of course, an opportunity to eat, but it is also a chance to socialize with others and to break from the day’s work or routine. However, for many older adults, eating is a struggle. Swallowing is an automatic process, yet imagine what it would be like if you experienced pain every time you swallowed. It can be an uncomfortable experience for older adults because of poor dentition, ill-fitting dentures, pain, or difficulty swallowing. This video presentation will make all staff aware of what they can do to support people with swallowing difficulties. Key topics to be addressed include: phases of the swallow; signs and symptoms of swallowing difficulties and aspiration; and special diet considerations.
